Specialised beef and dairy unit taking advantage of grassland renewal

Next Thursday's ScotGrass will be hosted by the Borders livestock farm of John Spence and Sons. Neil Ryder dropped in to see the farm behind the demonstration. After the Spence family lost their cattle and sheep to foot-and-mouth disease in March 2001 they took the opportunity to completely reassess their farming business. The result is specialist beef and dairy production taking advantage of an extensive grassland renewal programme and additional cereals grown to make the farm as self-sufficient as possible for fodder and bedding supplies.
