Grass effect study finds formula for healthier milk

When researchers at Wageningen University in the Netherlands set up grazing trials three years ago to investigate the effect of different breeds of grass on dairy yields - the last thing they expect-ed to find was a formula for healthier milk. In 1999 representatives of the Dutch-based seed company Barenbrug, visited the department of plant sciences at Wageningen University situated south east of Amsterdam. Discussions on forage intake of dairy cows and grass quality resulted in a four-year grazingtrial undertaken by Dr Anjo Elgersma, associate professor of Grassland Science at the university, and three PhD students.
