Early weaning of piglets is often accompanied by growth losses and diarrhea. Post-weaning diarrhea is usually associated with the proliferation of one or more strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in the gastrointestinal tract. Various nutritional approaches for optimising the weaning transition and minimising enteric diseases have been tested in the past decade (Lalles et al., 2007). Most investigations have been concerned with nutritional approaches on the effects of diet components (e.g. protein, fibre, etc.) and alternative substances (e.g. organic acids, zinc, prebiotics, probiotics) on pig performance and various aspects of gastrointestinal tract physiology, microbiology and immunology. Among these, beneficial effects of some organic acids and zinc sources have been confirmed. Overall it appears that prebiotics and probiotics may be the most promising way to improve intestinal health in weaned piglets. The principal mode-of-action of seems to be caused by changes in gastrointestinal microbiology, including enhanced numbers of favourable bacteria (lactobacilli, bifidobacteria) and/or decreased numbers of potentially pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli, etc.) together with more favourable profiles of fermentation products thrnnnhnnt the intestinal tract ( alles et al..
