A survey of feed mills showed that only 40 % of mixers were operating within the optimum filling ratios. This could have consequences for feed homogeneity and therefore feed quality. Most mixer manufacturers suggest an optimum filling ratio of 70-85%for their mixers. However, a field study that we carried out in ten countries, testing 30 mixing lines in the years 2006 and 2007, found that only 40% of mixers were operating within this range. The others had either a lower or a higher filling ratio.
