UK 700 million pounds deal to tackie waste in Cumbria could be a bonus for cement plants

A UK 700 million pounds plan to revolutionise the way Cumbria deals with household waste will be considered by county councillors. Under a proposed 25 year deal with waste company Shanks Cumbria, two UK 20 million dollars waste treatment centres will be built at Hespin Wood, near Carlisle, and at an unnamed site in Barrow. The centres, known as mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plants, dry out and separate rubbish to recycle as much as possible, dramatically reducing landfill. Much of what is left is compacted into solid recovered fuel (SRF) which can then be sold to businesses as a cheap alternative to gas or coal. Other waste can be used as compost to cap landfill sites or as aggregate for the construction industry. About 10 percent is sent to landfill.
