Europe: On 16 May 2007 the Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), in concert with the Economic and Social Council of Greece (OKE), organised a public hearing on the cement industry in Europe. The most important issues emerging from the discussions related to the regulatory environment, energy, social partnership, and environmental impact. Participants called for reform of the regulatory environment as the current situation, specifically the impact of the emissions trading scheme, led to trade distortions and failed in its primary role of providing an inducement to reduce CO_2 emissions.
