A 'Tower' of strength: Lafarge in Vietnam

Vietnam's cement industry will undergo rapid expansion over the next five years as forecasted strong economic growth is expected to create boom times for the construction industry. Cement consumption will grow by about 3Mt a year or over 33 percent by 2010, though the domestic cement industry's capacity could expand at an even faster pace as investment in cement plant construction surges during the next few years. One company interested in developing cement production in Vietnam is Lafarge, which commissioned a 500,000t per year grinding plant in 2006. Located southeast of Ho Chi Minh City on the Long Tau River at Phuoc Khanh in Dong Nai province, the plant has been fully operational since October 2006. Built in less than 18 months at a cost of 30million US dollars by Sinoma of China, the Lafarge cement grinding plant has private port facilities which include a 200m long wharf and a single 185m long jetty designed to accommodate vessels up to 15 metres in draft.
