In-situ degradability of guar (Cyamopsis tetragonaloba) korma and other arid feeds in sheep using polyester bag techniques

To utilize some of the locally available non conventional cheaper feed resources of arid region for economical animal production an experiment was conducted with sheep. In situ degradability of different feed ingredients viz. cotton seed cake, tumba (Citrullus colocythis) seed cake, sun dried poultry droppings, bajra grain grinded, guar korma and deoiled rice bran and four rations formulated utilizing these ingredients, were determined in three adult fistulated Nali sheep. The nutritional evaluationof feed ingredients and concentrate mixtures were carried out in a series of experiments for determination of degradability of dry matter, nitrogen and organic matter by nylon bag technique at 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours incubation period. The chemical composition of guar korma on DM percent basis was CP 45.00, EE 3.99, CF 7.28, NFE 35.00, T. ASH 8.00, Ca 1.29 and P 0.15. From the observations it was evident that dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and organic matter (OM) degradability showed an increasing trend, which was lowest at 2 hour and highest at 72 hour of incubation in all the feed ingredients under study. The guar korma degradability for DM, N and OM ranged from 34.54 ± 0.89 to 97.48 ± 0.89; 19.97+1.61 to 96.33±1.61 and 29.43±1.16 to 96.57±1.16 respectively. The maximum disappearance of DM, N and OM from the polyester bags in the rumen occurred at 8, 12 and 24 hours, therefore effective degradability (ED) was calculated for these three intervals. The higher values of effective degradability of DM, N and OM were obtained at 24 hour incubation time for guar korma and it was 79, 54 and 67 respectively.
