New orders booked by the members of the VDMA's Large Industrial Plant Manufacturers' Group (AGAB) fell by 33% to Euro22.1bn, down significantly compared to the Euro32.8bn booked in 2008. Incoming orders in sectors closely related to basic commodities such as metallurgical plants and chemical factories were particularly unsatisfactory. However it was manufacturers of cement plants that were hit most fiercely. Difficulties in getting adequate project finance and declining cement consumption in many parts of the world has caused a collapse in investments in the building materials sector. Worldwide orders for new manufacturing capacity fell to 40Mt but between 2006 and 2008 the values were around 120Mt/yr.
