Health fears over 5m founds waste plan for Lafarge as waste treatment plans go on show to the public

UK: Fears have been raised that fuel produced at a proposed ?5m waste treatment plant will be a health hazard and harmful to the environment. Plans went on show to the public in January 2007 for a mechanical biological treatment plant on the Northacre Industrial Park, Westbury, Wiltshire that will remove more than 45,000t of rubbish from landfill every year. MBT uses natural microbes within the waste to accelerate the decomposition process, and once dried the final material, called refuse derived fuel, from the MBT plant can be safely handled, and in this case will be used as a fuel by Lafarge's Westbury cement works. But representatives from The Air That We Breathe Group and Wiltshire Friends of the Earth are so concerned about the impact of the scheme, they met with Hills Recycling and Ensorga, the two organisations involved with the plant, to outline their concerns, at Westbury's Laverton Hall.
