Lafarge opens new plant in Dujiangyan

CHINA Lafarge has acquired a 70 percent stake in a cement plant in the city of Chongqing, China, for 30m US dollars, through a joint venture with the municipality. The acquired plant in Sichuan province has a capacity of 0.6Mt, serving Chongqing's population of 31m. The municipality retains the remaining 30 percent stake in the plant. Under the joint venture, 20m US dollars will be invested by 2004 to double plant capacity. Lafarge has also opened its new 150m US dollars cement plant in Dujiangyan. The second high-tech plant Lafarge built in Dujiangyan, in central China, can produce up to 1.4Mta of cement and will serve a population of 10m around Chengdu, the company said. The company said the deals underpin its strategy to expand into the high-growth Chinese markets.
