The tenanted sector grew marginally in 2008, although fewer Farm Business tenancies were created and a smaller area of new land was let to farmers, continuing the steady decline seen since 2003. Previously vacant land let on FBTs slipped to just 10,000 acres in the 2008 results, compared to 13,000 acres in 2007 — and just 25% of the new inflow into the sector seen before 2003. The CAAV believes this reflects a shift in activity between landlords and farmers away from traditional letting arrangements towards alternative structures — such as joint-ventures or contract farming agreements.
