Benteler's double-sided CNC portal glass drilling machine is used for high speed drilling of multiple holes of varying sizes in any designated position on a glass sheet. The range is up to a maximum size of 3 meters X 6 meters. The necessary co-ordinates and drill selection are made without the requirement of any particular set-up work, except the input from the operator's display terminal designed for simple operation. Once entered, data can be saved under a file name for re-use.The machine is equipped with 2 sets of double-sided drilling spindles that can perform individual and simultaneous operations. Clamps on each spindle pair fix the position pneumatically independent of the glass thickness. Each spindle travels separately on the Y-axis at right angles to the direction of the conveyor and each can cover the complete width of the glass sheet with the selected drilling tool. The X-position is reached by indexing the glass sheet along the inactive free conveyor using a servo positioning beam referencing the datum edge so that no tolerances accumulate during the operation. The drilling spindles are equipped with automatic button collectors that protect the lower spindles and enable their easy removal. The collection arm swings up above the lower drill after it retracts and collects the button when the upper drill pierces through. The collector arm pneumatically swings back and deposits the button in the container. The container is connected to the lower drilling spindles which can be moved to the outside service position to empty the container. The water supply to the drill is turned off automatically along with the drilling spindle when the drill is not in operation. The rotary water heads can be easily serviced by moving the spindle to the outside service position.
