1996 was the biennial turn of pests and diseases for consideration at the annual Brighton Crop Protection Conference in November. Dr. Terry Mabbett reports on the new products unveiled there. Every year the conference expands its remit with movement into horticulture, forestry, amenity and public health and away from its original arable farming roots. But as always the chemical crop protection industry unveiled its new products. Every year reveals a particular theme in the new product section. This year everybody in the field of disease control appeared to be concerned with the management of mildew diseases, both downy and powdery, although the fungi that cause each are completely unrelated taxonomically.
