Skin cancers are the most common malignancies and can be broadly categorized into melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Sun exposure is a key risk factor for the development of skin cancers. In the United States, the incidence of melanoma has tripled since the 1970s, reported to be 18 cases per 100,000 population at the beginning of year 2000.1 The annual rate of inci-dence increase varies somewhat by the geographic region in question but has been esti-mated to range from 3% to 7% per year for the Caucasian population.2 NMSCs, mostly squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and basal cell carci-nomas (BCCs), generally occur in the elderly population over 50 years of age, and the incidence is increasing.3 The associated mortality rate for NMSCs has remained steady in the United States since the 1970s and ranges from 0.8% to 1.0%. They are expected to account for more than 1 million cases of newly diagnosed cancers in the United States in 2008.4
