A series of pressures has had the domino effect of pushing the sector into one of the worst economic slumps in the past 25 years. In early May, Statistics Canada released Publication 22-202, "Greenhouse, Sod and Nursery Industries" for 2004. This publication is the compilation of information that you as growers provide Statistics Canada through their annual survey. The results "speak volumes" about the state of the Ontario and Canadian greenhouse floriculture sector. The tables outlining production and sales values confirm the general consensus throughout the floriculture industry that production has declined in some products, particularly cut flowers, and that sales have been sluggish and product pricing has been soft during the past year both provincially and nationally. Ontario, however, still represents over 50 per cent of total Canadian production.
