Using super absorbent polymers in new matrix for controlled-release fertilizers

Controlled release fertilizers are the subject of increased interest as environmental concerns grow about nitrate leaching in soils. A new approach to producing controlled release fertilizers, currently under development, is to use anionic polyacrylate super absorbent polymers as a matrix to hold large amounts of nitrogen compounds, e.g. nitrates, ammonium compounds and urea.
