Clones: an overview

The hottest topics in viticulture will depend on whom you talk to, but certainly some of the culprits are soils, rootstocks, and clones. These, taken with the overriding decision of variety, certainly are the foundation of successful vineyard production. At this time, we are going to consider clones. To begin, we obviously need to know what constitutes a "clone." The word is derived from the Greek word for "twig," referring to the fact that a clone must be started from a twig - it must be asexuallypropagated. Today we have other ways to asexually propagate plants - budding and grafting as well as other forms of micro-propagation.
