By understanding the balance of nutrient deposits and withdrawals in your growing media, you can fine-tune your fertilizer supply. Electrical conductivity (also known as conductivity or soluble salts) is a term used to measure the total concentrationof salts in a solution. When salts are dissolved in water, they break apart into their individual constituents called ions. For example, sodium chloride or table salt (Nad), when dissolved in water, breaks apart into sodium ions (Na) and chlorine ions (Cl). Since pure water has no electrical conductivity (EC equals 0), the greater the EC, the more salt that is dissolved in the solution.
