The use of Elkem Microsilica~R in fire-resistant gypsum wallboard

Elkem Microsilica~R is a mineral composed of ultrafine, amorphous spheres of silicon dioxide (SiO2) that are captured during the smelting of quartz to produce silicon and ferrosilicon. It is in abundant supply, is available in most parts of the world and adds fire-resistance properties to gypsum wallboard. This article reports on research into how the product improves fire test results and to better understand other product characteristics that may be beneficially impacted by including Elkem Microsilica in gypsum board.
