The restless road twists, turns and offers breathtaking views as you drive up Cleopatra Hill, to the town The New York Sun. on February 5, 1903, dubbed The Wickedest Town in the West. But in the early 1900s, there were no roads and the future town of Jerome, hovering two thousand feet above Arizona's Verde Valley, on the lower steppes of Mingus Mountain, grew from camps located near diggings where rough, hardened miners staked claims and scrabbled for ore. Eventually Jerome became a thriving company town, the fourth largest in the Arizona Territory and one of the most famous copper "cities" in the world.
