International Effort to Produce Voluntary Industry Cyanide Code Completed

Under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the then International Council on Metals and the Environment (ICME), an international multi-stakeholder workshop on cyanide management in gold mining was held in Paris in May 2000. The result was an international effort to develop a voluntary, global industry Code for the management of cyanide in gold mining. The Code is scheduled to be publicly released in mid-March.The impetus for the workshop was the January 2000 tailings spill at the Aural mine near Baia Mare in Romania, which focused attention on the hazards of improper management of cyanide solutions. The global mining industry committed to improving the cyanide management practices, and that commitment galvanized the mining industry in support of the effort to develop the Code.
