For this purpose, waste obtained from the construction and demolition industry has been incorporated into the gypsum matrix as an alternative to the use of cellular solids such as perlite, vermiculite or expanded clay. In this way the use of raw materials can be reduced and the use of waste materials is facilitated. For years waste management has focused mainly on waste generated by households, businesses and industries, while the safe and efficient treatment of construction and demolition waste (CDW) has been under-emphasised. Every year in Europe, 890Mt of CDW is generated. From this an average of 50% is recycled. This number is far from the targets set by the European Commissions Renewable Energy Source Directive.1 In 2006 the building industry generated the largest volume of waste of all sectors. Therefore, construction waste has been identified as a current priority for the European Union (EU), representing approximately 49% of the total waste generation in the EU in 2008.
