U.S. Navy Secretary: ‘Green Fleet’ Biofuel Cost US$26/Gallon

U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Maybus revealed July 27 in a letter to U.S. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) that a recent test of “drop-in” biofuel produced by the Syntroleum/Tyson Foods “Dynamic Fuels” joint venture and the algae-based biofuel from Solazyme cost a total of US$26 per gallon, or about 10 times what the Navy would pay for ordinary, petroleum-based ship bunker fuel.
