Massachusetts-based A123 Systems announced February 7 that it won an order from AES Gener for a 20-megaWatt (MW), battery-based backup grid power system in northern Chile. The so-called "spinning reserve" (also known as "frequency regulation") battery-backup power system "is capable of providing up to 20-MW of power nearly instantaneously," according to A123. "This output is designed to be maintained for 15 minutes at full power, allowing the system operator to resolve [a power generation or transmission problem] event or bring other standby units online."
