Shale Accounts for 10% of World’s Crude, 32% of Global Natural Gas Supplies-Study

Oil and natural gas resources from shale formations in the United States and nearly 50 other countries account for 10% of the world’s crude and 32% of global gas supplies, according to a U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) analysis released June 10. Shale oil and gas resources have already revolutionized production in the U.S. These resources – producible in great volumes at a fairly low cost – provided 29% of domestic crude oil production and 40% of U.S. natural gas production in 2012, EIA data showed. Although North America is currently leading the pack in shale production – only the U.S. and Canada produce shale oil and gas in commercial amounts – some countries may have even greater potential, according to the agency.
