EU Parliament OKs 6% Limit on Food-Based Biofuels in Transport Sector

The European Parliament on September 11 voted 356-327 to approve a 6% limit on food-based and land-based biofuels, up from a 5% limit previously proposed by the European Commission. However, Parliament failed to approve a related motion to launch negotiations with the European Council for final approval over the bill. As a result, the bill would go through a second reading. Reacting to the decision, the European Green Party said it “welcome the vote to ensure that the greenhouse-gas [GHG] emissions resulting from changes in land use will be accounted-for under the EU fuel-quality directive.”
