A new study from New York-based energy market consultancy PIRA Energy Group finds that U.S. spot natural gas prices are heading toward “significant” price volatility because of growing U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The study could throw more cold water on the claims of “cheap gas forever” by proponents of converting diesel vehicles to LNG or compressed natural gas (CNG). “The price of Henry Hub [spot U.S. natural gas] will become significantly more volatile once U.S. LNG exports begin, and the more export capacity that is approved and built, the greater the volatility will be,” according to PIRA. The study, titled Liquefied Henry Hub: The Repercussions of North American LNG Exports at Home and Abroad, concludes that much of the natural gas market’s attention is focused on how Henry Hub gas pricing will influence the world once LNG exports begin, according to PIRA.
