Over a Chinese dinner in October 2001, during the Enamelist Society conference at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, TN, several attendees from Wisconsin and Illinois concluded that the upper midwest needed a guild. Five people attended that dinner and formed a steering committee for the new Great Lakes Enameling Guild. Potential members were recruited first from conference attendees. Since a number of the committee are working artists, personal contact from art shows and classes, as well as the membership list from the Enamelist Society, was used to build a list of potential members. Two bulk mailings were done to enamelists in our region.
