Evidence for the impact of a giant extra-terrestrial body 65 million years ago, and its environmental effects, is widely documented. The impact would have led to the emission of thermal radiation from the hot expanding plume of vapour and debris formed following the impact. It has been widely speculated that this event would have led to global wildfires, as evidenced by the presence of soot at multiple Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary sections. However, in other sections, in for example North America, charcoal is rare, and non-charred plant material is present across the boundary sections.
