It has been corroborated that the sign and amplitude of the annual mean IMF B_z component agree with the structure of the large-scale magnetic field of the Sun in its polar zones. Therefore, recurrent geomagnetic activity is best pronounced in the cycles when the solar field at the north pole is positive.
