Dentists at the University of Toronto, Canada, have discovered that a 'sweet tooth' cou Id be genetic: during a clinical trial, they found that a variant of a gene called GLUT2 was present in people who consume more sugar than their peers. 'Environmental factors can influence the foods that we like and dislike,'explained researcher Ahmed El-Sohemy, 'but what this line of research demonstrates is that there is also a biological or a genetic basis for some of our likes and dislikes of foods' So, next time you reach for that bag of sugar in the supermarket, take comfort -it's probably not your fault you're craving something sweet However, you should still consider your purchase, for sugar -one of the world's true staple foods; there is evidence of sugarcane cultivation as early as 10,000 BC in northeast India - has long been a highly profitable crop. And where there are winners, there are always losers.
