Mexico’s Pemex forecasts fall in 2009 gas production for first time since 2002

Mexican state monopoly Pemex is forecasting a drop in gas output this year for the first time since 2002, mainly due to declining production of associated gas from its Cantarell oil field. The company projects 6.45 Bcf/d (183MMcm/d) of gas production in 2009, down 6.76% from the 6.92 Bcf/d average in 2008. But Cantarell field gas production will drop from 1.6 Bcf/d in 2008 to roughly 900 MMcf/d in 2009, a reduction of around 44%. Pemex spokesman Carlos Ramírez described the 2009 production forecast as "conservative."
