As human cost of In Amenas crisis becomes clearer, industry ponders long-term implications

Governments, oil and gas companies and the families of those killed or still missing were on Monday counting the human cost of last week’s attack on Algeria’s In Amenas gas complex and the military operation mounted by the Algerian army to end the subsequent siege. Meanwhile, the oil and gas industry has been digesting the long-term implications of what is widely seen as the most serious attack on an oil and gas facility that anyone can remember. By midday on Monday, the death toll was being reported to be more than 50 hostages and, according to the Algeria government, 32 Islamist militants. But later on, during a press conference on Monday afternoon, the Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalik Sellal said a total of 37 foreign hostages from eight different countries - including 11 Algerian workers - had been killed during the attack. Seven of the victims had not been identified and five other foreign workers were still missing. A total of 25 hostages had been found alive and were still being identified on Monday afternon.
