The base of the trees: a case study into the maintenance of trees in urban areas

Recommendations for the best type of ground surface beneath street trees, based on data from a 1997 survey of amenity and street trees in Sassuolo, Modena province, N. Italy. Tree condition (crown area, presence/absence of pest, disease or stress symptoms) was recorded in relation to the type of ground surface immediately surrounding the tree: this varied from bark mulch, dry cobbles, metal filigree soil protectors, bare soil, ground vegetation (herbaceous or evergreen).
