Vegetation survey and analysis of a protected area.

Results of a vegetation survey are presented. The area, 'Macchia di Marcello', is a protected area in Puglia, southern Italy, and has a unique vegetation type due geomorphological and climatic features. The S. and SW aspects of the area are dominated by Mediterranean scrubland, comprising Pistacia lentiscus, Calicotome villosa, Quercus coccifera, Olea europaea, Pyrus amygdaliformis and Cistus monspeliensis. Some perennial species such as Euphorbia apius and Bromus erectus are found on the margins of wooded areas. The lower side of the area is dominated by discontinuous forest cover of Quercus trojana, Q. pubescens, Q. coccifera and Phillyrea latifolia. There is evidence of oak decline. The Puglia region has been described as the 'oak land', with Q. trojana, Q. pubescens and Q. coccifera the most representative species.
