Diving deeper into the small bowel: a comparison of spiral and single-balloon enteroscopy.

No difference 'was found in the diagnostic yield or procedure duration between SBE and SE with a (nonstatis-tically significant) trend toward increasing diagnostic yield with operator experience. The overall diagnostic yield for obscure GI bleeding was 67% for the entire cohort; 38% of procedures performed for this indication were therapeutic. In a subset of this cohort who were able to be followed over time, approximately 83% had decreased transfusion requirements after therapeutic deep enteroscopy. The investigators found SE to achieve a greater depth of maximal insertion beyond the ligament of Treitz than SBE. One occurrence of perforation "with SBE was reported during the study period.
