Small-Scale GTL-FT Could Trigger ‘Energy Revolution:’ Wall Street Analysts

Bernstein & Co. on November 29 issued a new report indicating that small-scale gas-to-liquids (GTL) for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) fuels potentially could trigger a global “energy revolution.” Unlike the multi-billion-dollar-capex GTL-FT projects of Shell and Sasol, the smaller-scale GTL-FT projects would tap emerging technologies including the Velocys microchannel scheme or the CompactGTL scheme, according to the report. For the giant GTL projects, “what underlies these exceptionally high [capital] costs is that the conventional GTL reaction is not particularly efficient,” according to the Bernstein report.
