Report: U.S. SNG Could be More Expensive than Natural Gas until 2021 or 2030

An official report by the State Utility Forecasting Group (SUFG) for the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) finds that the synthetic natural gas (SNG) that would be produced and sold by Indiana Gasification starting in 2018 could be more expensive than conventional natural gas until 2021-2022 under two forecasts and possibly more expensive until 2030-2032 under two other forecasts. The new report, released in November 2013, cites one study by American Electric Power (AEP) indicating that SNG would be more expensive than conventional gas until around 2021, while a separate study by Wood Mackenzie indicates SNG reaching price parity with natural gas price around 2022
