Faster than a blink, a welder can injure his eyes without proper safety protection. Welders often require three light conditions to view a workpiece: normal light with a shield during grinding, a filter shade 4 or 5 for oxy-fuel cutting or welding, and a shade from 9 to 13 for arc cutting or welding. These changing work conditions typically have the welder switching between a shield for grinding and a welding helmet thereby creating a risk of injury whenever he "nods" the helmet, to view the weld joint before striking the arc. It's also a common cause of neck problems.
