During August, both the Newcastle (basis 6700kcal/kg a.d.) thermal coal and Richards Bay (basis 6000kcal/kg a.d.) spot prices strengthened, averaging US$119.50/t. Both prices remained steady for most of the month before finishing strongly in the last week of August. Indonesian Kalimantan (basis 5000kcal/kg a.d.) spot prices stopped its downward trend in early August to mimic the higher quality coals for the rest of the month and averaged US$76.50/t/FOB.
