Dinitramic acid or dinitramide, HN(NO2)2, and its salts have been used in the former USSR since 1971, but due to well known reasons this information had been kept secret until 1993, when the acid and some of its salts (ADN, KDN etc.) were re-discovered by SRI research group in USA1. After this event several Russian publications also started to appear in the open literature, e.g.2. In both countries it was shown that unlike the acid itself the salts of it are relatively stable compounds with decomposition temperatures varying from 150 to 200°C. Due to the high oxygen content some dinitramide salts, such as ADN and KDN, have immediately attracted attention as promising oxidizers in different applications.
