We aim to keep readers informed about the structure of surgical training and provide a platform for discussion when possible. In the first article, Revell summarises the government's proposals to reform the way the specialist registers are managed. We recently published a piece on pre-hospital trauma care training (Power, Trainees forum, June 2002). In the second article, Grainger re-examines ATLS training and challenges the myth that having an ATLS certificate means being trained in trauma. He investigates mechanisms that can provide learning to build on ATLS but emphasises the resources needed to do this.
