Putative Ichthyophthirius identified in the amphibian Bufo calamita through molecular screening.

The protozoan parasite Ichthyopthirius multifiliis is an important pathogen of many fish species. During molecular screening of 18S rRNA gene, we identified an apparent Ichthyopthirius from the amphibian Bufo calamita, to our knowledge the first such detection reported from a wild amphibian. This has important implications for parasite control approaches in aquaculture.
