Airports managed by Mexico's Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA) vary greatly in size, service schedules, and number of daily operations, from one domestic flight in Cuernavaca to more than 900 national and international operations in Mexico City. Despite these significant differences, we found common ergonomics issues related to some critical airport maintenance tasks. For airports managed by ASA, a department oversees the maintenance of aircraft movement areas such as runways and taxiways, including the lighting and visual aid systems. Because lamps and connection pits are at ground level, workers must sit or squat close to the ground for long periods. This results in pain in their waists and calves.
