Dear Editor, We read with great interest the recent work by B Schell et al. [1], who used a dual-source Flash CT to examine the paranasal sinus in patients, comparing a high pitch and low pitch protocol in terms of dose and image quality. The authors of this study concluded that diagnostic image quality can be maintained while cutting the radiation exposure down to approximately half (Volume CT dose index: 7.22 mGy vs 2.77 mGy) using the dual-source high pitch mode [1]. However, we believe this conclusion may be misleading for the readers. Changing the pitch should not significantly affect the dose on this system as Siemens (Forchheim, Germany) uses a Sure View technique (effective mAs rather than mAs) to maintain image quality and dose regardless of selected pitch.
