Musculoskeletal: What's different in children? Playing with a friend: Hooks fingers in friends t-shirt: Left pinky is sore and swollen

Case history: This 12-year-old boy was fooling around and having fun with a friend. However, other kids were around and somehow our patient bumped into his friend and got his fingers caught in the friend's t-shirt. The left fifth digit especially became entangled, and it bent backwards. The patient experienced pain immediately and there was swelling around the base of the fifth digit. He was able to move the finger but there was some pain. Initially, this was not so bad but it did continue, and thus, his grandmother brought him to our emergency room (ER) for further evaluation.
