PLANT DIVERSITY (ANGIOSPERM) OF STRESS SITES OF SULTANPUR (UTTAR PRADESH)

Eighty six species of Angiosperms have been recorded from the Sodic soil affected stress sites of Sultanpur district in U.P. The district of Sultanpur occupying an area of 4436 sq. kms is situated between latitudes 25°59' and 26°40' north and longitude 81°32' and 82°41' east. It is surrounded on north by Faizabad while on the north-west and west by district Barabanki. In the east there are districts Jaunpur and Azamgarh. On southern boundary the districts Pratapgarh and Rae Bareli are co-terminus. The district lacks natural vegetation except around the ravines of the river Gomti and its tributaries, nalas, tanks, lakes and swamps. The area under forest is about 2288 ha. Measures are being taken to develop the forest. A few small dhak jungles arefound along the nalas. The grove area had been large. But lack of zeal among the rural folks for retaining and maintaining the area under grove is decreasing. The trees most favoured for groves are mango, jamun, mahua, jack fruit, neem and shisham. Theother type of trees which usually seen are aonla, gular, kathal, banyan and pipal. The babul is common everywhere. The fruit trees are also most frequently seen. The common varieties are orange, lemon, guava and plaintain.
