摘要

EMERGENCY NURSE was first published on March 25 1992, as an insert to its sister journal Nursing Standard. This milestone in emergency nursing history marked how far the specialty had grown from the days of casualty departments and, more importantly, how nurses working in the field had developed their role.In the first issue, consultant editor Ernie Botley asked readers to embrace change and look to the future. He said that, in the era of NHS trusts, nurses had a duty to meet targets and keep within tightly controlled budgets, a message that emergency nurses continue to hear today. Mr Botley also talked about scrutiny by purchasers and patients, also a familiar subject today. The same edition included articles on appropriate discharge planning, use of emergency departments (EDs) for primary care, and the development of the nurse practitioner role.
