Whereas it is possible to detect the cutting forces of lathes with certainty and reliability, this has so far been impossible in the case of machining centres. Due to the movement of the tool, the fact that some workpieces are extremely large, and the complexity of machining centres by comparison with lathes, no suitable sensors have so far been available. Now, however, trials conducted by Kistler Instrument AG, Winterthur Switzerland with force and bearing force measuring rings indicate that a solution is in sight.
